Clu Gulager
Rest in Peace
1928-2022
Clu Gulager, an American actor and director (known for his roles in The Virginian tv series, and the movie, The Return of the Living Dead), and a friend of the Reel Cowboys, passed away on August 5th, 2022. He will be sorely missed.

Here is a bio from the Clu Gulager family:
Clu Gulager, revered television and film actor, known for The Tall Man and The
Virginian
, died of natural causes at the home of his son John and beloved daughter-in- law Diane, surrounded by his loving family. Clu was as caring as he was loyal and
devoted to his craft, a proud member of the Cherokee nation, a rule-breaker, sharp and astute and on the side—always—of the oppressed. He was good-humored, an avid reader, tender and kind. Loud and dangerous.

As a writer and director, he made the influential short film A Day with the Boys, which opened the 1970 Cannes Film Festival as an example of the state of the art of filmmaking. He was shocked that he lived, for even a day after Miriam Byrd-Nethery, the love of his life, died 18 years ago. He was 93 years old. He is survived by his sons John and Tom, their partners Diane and Zoe, his cherished grandson Clu Mosha, dedicated fans, and decades of extraordinary students. His family will miss him terribly.

Here are some thoughts from Mark Weinger, a.k.a. Mark The Whip, Clu's good friend.

At the 2016 Reel Cowboys’ Silver Spur Awards show, I was 1st assigned to table #3 on my will-call ticket. That # was crossed out & on the back was hand written “table #10.” The move was Hashgacha Protis (Hebrew), Devine Providence.

Each table that year had a placemat under the center piece of flowers covered over with Halloween candies & treats.

The placemats were different at each table. The mats were photos of actors, or movie scenes, or movie posters, etc.

Near the end of the evening, after most the candy & treats were removed, I noticed that the placemat at table #10 was a $500 REWARD poster for Billy the Kid.

So I asked everyone at the table if they would mind if I took it; they all said Ok.

I picked it up & said, "I'm going to get Billy the Kid to autograph this tonight"... they all laughed thinking I was joking.

So I called Clu & asked if I could meet him at the Astro Burger after the show.

As they say... the rest is history...

On a side note, Clu regularly hung out at the Astro Burger on Santa Monica Blvd., in West Hollywood, California, every night until 3-4 a.m. when they closed. It was 1 mile from his apt around the corner from PINKS. To him, the Astro Burger was his office; he felt safe there & the staff treated him like a KING. He had his table right under the giant photo of paparazzis from the movie "La Dolce Vita" by Fellini (as seen in the selfie photo with Robert Weinger, below). He was deeply hurt when the pandemic lockdowns kept him from going there the last 2 yrs of his life. He loved to meet with his students and friends and interact with the staff and patrons there.

Clu loved riding motorcycles with his pal, Steve McQueen. However, he stopped driving in his late 70s, so he walked everywhere a bus didn’t go.
